Budget Talk ’10

Update #2:  Posted December 19th, 2009

At the OCDSB Budget Committee meeting on Monday, December 14, staff presented a list of possible budget changes (note that changes means mainly cuts, but also a few revenue generating possibilities) to deal with the $14 million shortfall that is being predicted for the coming 2010/2011 school year.  The changes presented by staff totaled approximately $17 million, with an additional approximately $ 1 million in options being added during the December 14 meeting.  This means that to meet the $14 million shortfall, trustees will be able to eliminate up to $ 4 million in cuts.

The list of staff options for budget changes can be viewed on the OCDSB website.  View the report, with the list of options at the end.

The budget decision making process for 2010/2011 is going to be a very difficult one, as all involved acknowledge the fact that any easy cuts have already been made long ago.

OCASC plans to hold budget discussion meetings on OCASC meeting nights, from 6:15 to 7:00, just prior to the OCASC meeting, in the same location.  Anyone who is interested in becoming more knowledgeable about the school board budget is welcome to join us.  We will focus on ways in which OCASC can contribute in a positive manner to the budget process within our Board and on ways in which OCASC may wish to pursue budget issues in a more general sense at the provincial level.  More information on our first meeting in January will be available in the near future.

The OCDSB faces a shortfall of an estimated $14 million in the coming 2010/2011 school year budget. School Board staff and the school board’s Budget Committee have commenced planning for the coming year many months earlier than is the norm, to try to find an acceptable solution to this shortfall. OCASC has representation on the Budget Committee. Both OCASC and the OCDSB believe it is important to inform parents about the budget as much as possible, so that a mutual understanding can be reached, and there is informed community input to the deliberations. To this end, the OCASC web site and OCASC News will present regular nuggets of information related to the budget. If you have any information regarding the budget that you would like to know more about, please e-mail us with your suggestions.
