Ontario Regulation 612/00 under the Education Act requires every publicly funded school to have a school council. The principal of the school is a member of that council and serves as the main link between the council and school administration. A constructive relationship built on respect and open communication supports the council’s advisory role and helps focus efforts on student learning and well-being.
Regular, brief communication keeps information current. Many councils hold short check-ins with the principal before or after meetings or exchange updates by email. Principals contribute operational context and updates on school initiatives, while councils provide the parent and community perspective. When each understands the other’s responsibilities, meetings stay purposeful and cooperative.
Discussing expectations early in the school year—such as how agendas are prepared, how information is shared, and how follow-up will occur—creates clarity. Predictable communication builds trust and allows the council to focus on its main work: providing informed advice and encouraging parent involvement in the life of the school.
